Federal authorities have officially joined a legal challenge initiated by California Republicans, seeking to block the California's recently passed congressional redistricting map.
This court case, submitted to a US district court, challenges the redistricting plan championed by the state's Democratic governor, which was created in reaction against a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"The state's electoral map represents a brazen power grab that violates civil rights and undermines the electoral system," declared the US attorney general.
Democrats have expressed confidence that the new maps will survive court challenges.
"The plaintiffs were defeated in the election and soon they will also lose in court," stated a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Legal Basis
The lawsuit claims that California's map wrongfully utilized racial considerations to heavily favor Hispanic voters in contravention of the federal constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a proxy to advance political interests, but that is exactly what the state legislature did with Proposition 50," stated a high-ranking representative from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
This courtroom confrontation represents the major counterpunch by Democrats in the continuing redistricting war that began in Texas and has extended to multiple states.
In contrast to elsewhere, where Republican state legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan needed public consent, which it received with nearly 65% of the vote.
Wider Consequences
Democrats need to gain just a small number of GOP-controlled House seats to take control of the chamber in next year's congressional elections.
The political group controlling the majority will shape the remaining period of the sitting president's term, deciding if a GOP-controlled legislature will continue to deliver its political program or face resistance, investigations and potential additional obstacles.
