Tetris Wouldn't Win at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Could Fix That

As any major prize-giving event nears, you'll find a demand for introducing fresh award types to honor overlooked contributions and satisfy the spirits of enthusiasts with niche passions.

A fellow writer previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. So would board games, which is someone's personal cause. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize because like all single-minded supporters, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal remains most pressing and significant. Here's the proposal: We need an award type for logic-based games.

Categorizing Game Types

Classifying creative works is not a science; it’s very subjective, and it will always start arguments resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents a necessary evil in the world of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse they hardly constitute as a single art form.

For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to receive acknowledgment, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.

Existing Game Classification System

Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these classifications effectively encompass a lot of ground, allowing placement for numerous titles.

Different situation exists for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Examine these examples from recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: structural challenges of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. What category would fit them between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.

The Representation Problem

There are dozens outstanding logic titles released every year lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested small studio competitions.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked in any category during that awards season
  • Another creative title was excluded that year
  • A beloved organization game got ignored in 2021
  • Just some logic titles scraped into independent or mobile categories

Importance of Logic Titles

Commonly they're small games, but the art of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles count as most engaged experiences in the world and have been for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title rivals well-known building titles for the title of best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, while interacting with diverse game types.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter that issue. One could readily select five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude so many good games out.

To emphasize again, these are games lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators operate at the hard edge game development, developing some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. Don't make them wait generations.
