Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in implementing replay systems.
Video review systems will be launched at The Championships this year.
Players are granted the ability to contest certain rulings made by the official, mirroring the practice currently in use at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.
This technology will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles contests.
This step arrives only a year after the AELTC introduced electronic line calling, which brought an end to the longstanding tradition of line officials.
Reviewable Decisions
Players cannot to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can request the official to review specific situations, including:
- If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
- If a shot touched an opponent's racquet or person on the way past.
- Possible hindrance end of a point.
Importantly, there will be no limit on the number of challenges a competitor can initiate.
Practical Application
A recent case occurred in a recent tournament recently, where a top player initiated the video challenge against his opponent.
Draper admitted it was a tough situation for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "played the rules quite well."
The umpire watched a replay and determined Draper was guilty of interference, granting the point to his opponent.
Growing Trend
This technology are not new for major tournaments. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.
Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews in place at all of its events.
Additional Innovations
A further innovation at The Championships this year will be the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the ELC system.
This solves instances where spectators have sometimes been unsure if a shot was out or in.
In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
